After ABATTAGE, I composed À Dé-Couvert & Vielgestältiglasterhaft (Pervers Polymorph) from pieces played and recorded in the years 1973/1976. Some have remained as they are, others have been reworked so that they can remain true and really alive in my memory, as I had dreamed of them at that time when Pascal Bouscailloux & Marc Bohy were with me the joyfully adventurous protagonists of the Mandragore band…

Still others like for example (ie), originally a music played solo and recorded live, at home in August 1984, for a Super 8 film that is, were invented long afterwards because they had then become necessary. This is a blind version, reduced by a third for the circumstance. Basic Thought also, which is the music for another film, very short film, L'Effort Humain, as well as On See-Side which is a very enhanced cover of the piano piece which already appeared, partly reduced, quite buried in the depths of ABATTAGE.

The furtive appearances of the music of Courant d'Air (Marcel Atienzar, Guy-André Lagesse & Georges Petit) & Claude Parle are the result of chance (the re-recording of the magnetic tapes sometimes reserves good surprises) and are made independent of their will.

So I played all the music, made all the sound recordings, all the mixes, re-mixes, all the edits, un-edits & re-edits, again & again ... the analog / digital transfer, the editing, all the photographs, the models, the presentation and the layout of News between 1973 and 2020, in various places of the Parisian Suburbs, Paris, Nice, Naples, Corsica & now the Var.

This project, started at the end of 1985, would never have seen the light of day without the support and affection of all my family and friends, Simone, Catherine & Nathalie Grumbach & Jean-François Ballèvre in particular, Jacques Berrocal, Jean-François Pauvros & Roger Turner above all, who waited with generous confidence and singular patience for so long for this project to come out of limbo… first of all in the form of a CD in 2001 by the grace of friendship a little surprised by Jacques Oger, then finally now in full size.

I am also thinking of Françoise & Mireille Pauthe who stoically supported the composition & recording of On See-Side in their apartment and on their piano (the one of my childhood) in Nice during the spring of 1978.

Nor do I forget plus the many years of reflection spent with Patrice Noiville ...

Thanks to all.

Alors quoi ? Sens de la formule ? Vaine rhétorique ?
Cause toujours, beau merle…

Like so many of you
I've got my doubts about how much to contribute
To the already rich among us…
How long can I pretend that music's more relevant
Than fighting for a socialist world?

Someone watching us, knows I'm dead
Black plastic along blue-black wall
Small square for faces where dead men can look through
Run along through the prison bar
Throw a stone across an empty road
You and your friend will be found

Outside my daydream
I've woken up to watch you sleep…

Robert Wyatt

"Think like a strategist, act like a barbarian," I heard echoing, in the familiar morning half-lightof the kitchen at coffee time, on the loudspeaker of my little radio, in the midst of other phrases which painfully put into account electoral results, casualties of the weekend, recent massacres brought back by the backwash of terrifying foreign policies and other new indictments carried out by a few busy judges. So what ? Meaning of the formula? Vain rhetoric?
Always talk, beautiful blackbird ...
Do we gloss over the too apparent power of words? Are we making fun of the meaning of the formula? Nevertheless, here again we will have to unfold according to the meaning borrowed by the formulas, be they mathematical, incantatory, magical, outdated or whispered, but in sixty-few minutes.
Abattage (a word often flirtatiously showing only one of its two "t's"), as used in the theater, means to play or dance brilliantly; extended to common language, it then takes on the meaning of having the assurance of gesture and language. Music isn't verb, though? Certainly, but everything here makes sense. Who has not seen our man of sounds embedded, as a sentry at the front between sandbags, behind his EMS “VCS III”, between magnetic tapes and cassettes, between cut-up and mixing, between inputs and outputs, between microphone and pebbles practice, will not understand the why of the word author that one could believe written only for him and placed at the beginning of these lines.
Foussat Jean-Marc? Riflescopes on discreet frames and measured gestures, this is all the restraint inherent in sound engineering. But maximum firepower. No, not power but radius of action or rather range, because it doesn't matter how powerful the bomb is when only "where it falls" matters.
And he thinks strategically that immediately he acts like a barbarian. Foussat Jean-Marc has a lot of the aviator flying over gravity in his autogyro from the Mad Max II scenario, causing ferocious snakes to fall on the backs of swift barbarians but thus savage to the endian, resembling them more than the hieratic Max, a policeman civilized down to the two ends of his sawn-off cannon. Does Jean-Marc Foussat belong to a scene? At best in a theater of operations. And doesn't this man mostly live in a cockpit?
Potlatch? Barbarity ? The two pair up like the stirrup boot.
Doesn't a barbarism want to be this fault against the language where would be forged the words which this one could not accept?
Before this final version, Nouvelles, an extension of the previous Slaughter, circulated in the form of a CD-R hyphen whose even bits reactivated the network, a scout talent commissioned to tour the owner and circumscribe the theater. operations, the final reconnaissance before this spring offensive.
It is always adorned with a full page framing a taut cord, between the digital here and the composite elsewhere that had seen it spurt out, over the dirty and tumultuous waves mixing, on the flatness of his jacket, ochres in mud washed out of gray-blue with the carmine of his surviving title; dirty and tumultuous record, even out bloody rageous, as it is written on the Third of Soft Machine, the double album in the colors of craft* paper whose exuberant June Moon shines on all of its four sides; we then thought of those warlike navies where the painters of the Grand Century celebrated the great feats of arms of the admiralties of the time. In shipyards, the operation of laying a ship on its side to repair it is called slaughter. The cockpit of the sailing cars piloted by these daring sailors chasing bad winds circling the globe is called the cockpit.
And when the fourth part of this album is titled On See-Side, thus tempting all homophonies, we can risk ourselves with Jean-Marc Foussat on a drastic "seaside rendezvous".
Yes but how will it be? “Hurricane and drifting”, writes Valère Novarina somewhere.
